St Mary Primary School

Welcome to our school!

February Newsletter

School Closures: The school will be closed on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th for Midterm Break and Monday 19th February 2018 for Staff Development.

Catholic School’s Week: Thanks to everyone who took part in the Catholic School’s Week Mass on Sunday the 28th of January. The celebration continues with the highlight of the week being a very special assembly for all our Grandparents on Friday the 2nd of February.

The assembly begins at 10am and will last approximately 45mins. This assembly is specially for Grandparents but we understand parents may need to help/transport Grandparents. If there is a very large attendance Grandparents will be allocated seating first.

We hope many of the Grandparents can stay on for tea and light refreshments afterwards.

Shared Education: We are delighted to announce that St. Mary’s P.S and Maguiresbridge Primary School will be working closely together over the reminder of this academic year in a Shared Education Programme of lessons. The P.5-P7 Shared Education Programme begins with an Ice Breaker Session at Todd’s Leap Activity Centre on Wednesday the 7th of February. Following this, on Wednesdays the children will have Shared Classes in St. Mary’s and Maguiresbridge based around the theme of Road Safety. More details will follow. The other classes’ programmes will begin in March, details to follow then.

Soccer: We welcome Robbie Walker to school who will coach soccer to P.5-P.7 girls on Monday afternoons for 3 weeks commencing 5th, 12th & 26th February. The girls will then go on to play in a tournament on Thursday March 1st on the 3G surface in the Bawnacre, Irvinestown.

Healthy Eating Policy: Thank you everyone who responded to the Healthy Eating Policy Consultation Process. The feedback has been wholly positive. I have attached a letter of feedback here. The policy will come into effect on Monday the 12th of February after our launch on Ramp Up The Red day.

Ramp up the Red Day: We will be having a Special Charity Ramp up the Red Day in aid of Mary’s Meals on Friday 9th of February. We ask that your child wears something red to school that day and donates £1 to the charity. The Eco-Committee and staff will be organising various healthy ‘red’ activities for the children on the day, including healthy red smoothies, skipathon.

Multi-Cultural Day: P.1-P.4 children will be visiting Lisnaskea Library on Thursday the 8th of February to participate in a multicultural event. During the day the children will have the opportunity to experience language, dance, art and drama from various World Cultures.

Ash Wednesday: We would sincerely like to thank Fr. Kevin Duffy who will distribute ashes to the children in school on Ash Wednesday the 14th of February at 10am.

Book Fair: The Book Fair will arrive on Thursday 15th March until Thursday 22nd March. The children will have an opportunity to use their £1 voucher to buy a book from the book fair.

World Book Day: We will celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 1st March. We would like your child to dress up as a character from a Book to mark the occasion. We expect this to be a fun day for all, using clothes they have at home. Teachers will provide the children with ideas in class. Prizes (book vouchers) will be given for the best dressed in each class.

P.7 – P.2 Book Buddies: We have started a new programme with the P.7’s and 2’s on Friday mornings this term. The programme involves P.7’s pairing with P.2 pupils and reading to them one to one. The key aims of the programme are to develop a love of books, model good reading habits and further encourage reliability and responsibility among the older children.

Clothes Collection Fundraising: At this time of year many of you will be doing an early Spring clear out to make way for the recent Christmas purchases. To help with this, we are running a School Clothes Collection Fundraiser.

Bring any unwanted clothes for our clothes collection to the school between the 20th and 23rd of February inclusive.

Important, once the clothes have been collected we will not be collecting again for another year. The company can only accept the following items: Clothing (Men’s, Woman’s and Children’s), Household textiles i.e. curtains, towels, paired shoes, handbags and belts.

Feis: Feis Fhearmanach 2018 takes place in March. Good luck to all the children who are taking part. We would prefer if the children wear their school uniform when performing their verse on stage. Competition Cards will be given out as soon as they arrive in late February.
