Welcome back everyone and wishing you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.
We would like to thank you all for supporting our Christmas Nativity which proved to be a great success. We would also like to thank all those adults who helped make the night so special. This was a tremendous success for our school funds, as we raised £900.
Our Christmas Raffle was a great success too. Thank you all so much for your generosity. £550 was raised for our chosen charity this year, Water Aid. We hope to build on this £550 with another Charity fundraiser in Easter.
SCHOOL SWIMMING PROGRAMME
The School Swimming program begins this year for P.6 & 7 on Tuesday the 8th of January. As the numbers are bigger this year for P.5-7 we are going to split the P.5 class. This means half of the P.5 class (Group 1) will go one week to swimming and the next week the other half (Group 2). The P.5 children will be told which group they are in. Similar to previous years we have booked the hall to play Netball, Soccer, Hurling, Camogie before the swim. The cost per pupil is £4 each Tuesday. Pupils wear uniform into school and bring PE gear and swimming gear to change into. P.5-P7 will have their lunch/dinner earlier on these days as we will be leaving school at 12.30pm. Pupils are asked not to bring any money as they will not be permitted to use the vending machines.
The closing date for School Admissions (online) is Thursday the 31st of January at midnight. It is very important applications are received before this date and time as we expect larger than average numbers of applicants. If an application is late, it will automatically go to the bottom of the list regardless of our admissions criteria.
Catholic School’s Week
27th of January to 2nd of February is Catholic School’s Week. The theme this year is, “Catholic Schools: Celebrating the Work of Our Local Catholic Schools.” The children will be engaged in a variety of lessons and activities throughout the week to mark the occasion. Catholic School’s Week will begin with a special Sunday Mass in St. Mary’s Church Maguiresbridge on Sunday the 27th of January at 10am where the children will be heavily involved in the Liturgy. A special Grandparent’s Assembly on Friday the 1st of February at 10am is also a highlight with tea and refreshments served afterwards. Visit www.catholicschools.ie for more information.

A meeting for the ‘Do This in Memory’ for the P.4 children is to be arranged for later this month, a text message will be sent out.

P.7 – P.2 Book Buddies
We will be starting a new programme with the P.7’s and 2’s this term. The programme involves P.7’s pairing with P.2 pupils and reading to them one to one. The key aims of the programme are to develop a love of books, model good reading habits and further encourage reliability and responsibility among the older children.
It has been well publicised that unfortunately the P.1-4 Ulster Council Coaching Programme has ceased in schools. We are very fortunate here in St. Mary’s to have well trained and skilled staff who will fill this gap and the current PE timetable for P.1-4 children will continue.
P.6 & 7 children will have a new GAA coach this year Fergal Shannon who will coach on Thursday mornings 11.15am-12.30pm.
P.5-7 children will have the wonderful opportunity to take part in an interactive and skill rich IT programme organised by Sentinus. The key focus will be on Robotics. The workshops will take place on Friday the 11th of January up until lunch time.
The P.1 class will have access to Mathletics, the online Numeracy Learning Resource from next week. This is an excellent learning aid for pupils to access from home and which is set at their level. The pupils are not expected to know everything in the programme.
Shared Education Programme
The Shared Education Programme continues this term with all classes involved in Shared Lessons with our partner school Maguiresbridge P.S. P.6 & 7 will be doing a Young Enterprise program on Thursdays, P.5’s have a trip to Lisnaskea Recycling centre on Tuesday the 29th of Jan, P.3 & 4 will be learning about space and will have a trip to Armagh Planetarium, P.2 musical pathways and numeracy games, P.1 play and maths.
Snack – Primary 1 and 2 Pupils
The cost for this term is £19.50.
Our Spanish Classes have been funded by Extended Schools money which is determined by the number of Free School Meals on the roll. As our percentage of FSM has declined, our Extended Schools funding has declined also this year and will likely be zero next year. As a result, Spanish Classes will continue this term but on a fortnightly basis rather than weekly. First Spanish class will be Wednesday 16th January 2019.
Any money being paid into the school must be placed in an envelope with the name of the child/ren on the envelope and an explanation for what the money is for. All Money should be sent into school at the beginning of each week please.
Milk (P3-P7) this term is £13.80 including children in receipt of Free School Meals.
