School Closures: The school will be closed on Monday 19th of March for St. Patrick’s Day. The school will close on Thursday 29th March at 12pm for the Easter holidays and will reopen on Tuesday 10th April.
Book Fair: The Book Fair will arrive on Thursday 15th March until Thursday 22nd March. The children will have an opportunity to use their £1 voucher to buy a book from the book fair. The book fair will be open at 9am, 2pm and 3pm to suit parent pick up times.
World Book Day: We will celebrate World Book Day on Friday 9th March. We would like your child to dress up as a character from a Book to mark the occasion. We expect this to be a fun day for all, using clothes they have at home. Teachers will provide the children with ideas in class. Prizes (book vouchers) will be given for the best dressed in each class. Children will also be taking part in lots of fun reading challenges to mark the day.
Cumann na mBunscol
Boys & Girls Indoor Hurling & Camogie Blitz Congratulations to both our Boys’ and Girls’ Teams who both reached their respective finals of the County Indoor Hurling and Camogie Tournaments. The Girls were unfortunate to lose out in an exciting final. The Boys had better luck winning the final and they now go on to represent Fermanagh in the Ulster Finals in Magherfelt on Wednesday the 25th of April. Good luck boys.
Quiz Good luck to the 4 P.7’s who are representing the school in the rescheduled Cumann na mBunscol quiz in the Irvinestown on Wednesday the 7th of March.
Indoor Soccer: Commiserations to the boys who were defeated by a Golden Goal in the semi-finals of the indoor 5 a side soccer competition in the Lakeland Forum on Monday the 5th February, they were very unlucky but can hold their heads high with their effort and great attitude throughout.
Key Stage 2 girls will be participating in a Netball Tournament on Tuesday the 13th of March in the Lakeland Forum. The tournament is being organised by the A Level students of Mount Lourdes. P.5-P.7 ch’n not attending will have swimming as normal on this day, there will be no P.E in the hall on this day however.
Feis Fhearmanach 2018 takes place in March. Good luck to all the children who are taking part. We would prefer if the children wear their school uniform when performing their verse on stage.
Easter Raffle: An Easter Raffle will take place on Wednesday 28th March in school. Tickets cost 30p each or 5 for £1:00. All money raised will go to Mary’s Meals.
Ramp up the Red Day All of the Children had a fantastic day on Friday the 9th of February, taking part in Ramp Up The Red Day, it was full of fun, excitement and exercise and all in aid of an excellent charity. Thanks to pupils, parents and staff we raised £90 for Mary’s Meals and launched our Healthy Eating Policy.
As part of the P.5-7 Shared Education Programme we will continue to focus on important Road Safety Messages. On Wednesday 21st of March, all of the children P.1-P.7 will participate in a PSNI presentation about key Road Safety messages for children. On Wednesday the 14th of March the Translink Education bus will be on hand to further engage and educate the children in a fun and interactive way about safety on buses.
During the month, some of the older children in the school will get the chance to participate in a road safety workshop highlighting the dangers of speeding. During this programme some of the children will form a panel to speak to members of the public who have been stopped by Police for exceeding the speed restriction. The Drivers will be invited to account for their actions in front of the prepared panel of children. This is an exciting and new initiative by the PSNI to get drivers to reduce speeds, especially outside of schools.
Eco School Initiative We would like to thank all those parents and extended family members who donated unwanted clothes to Clothes Collection drive during February. We will let you know when we find out how much money we raised for school funds.
Cancer Connect As part of our Whole School Eco Initiative we are linking up with Cancer Connect to provide a number of Health Promoting Workshops to the children on Monday 5th March. The workshops are fun and interactive which are set at age appropriate levels for each class.
Odd Sock Friday
To celebrate us all being different and as part of an overall Anti-Bullying message we will be having Odd Sock Friday on the 16th March. The children wear odd socks to school and bring in £1 for school funds. We intend to buy new wet play day board games with the money raised, a request which has been made by our School Council.
The Mass for the ‘Do This in Memory’ for the P.4 children will take place on Sunday 4th March.
First Confession will take place in St. Mary’s Church on Wednesday 7th March 2018 at 7.30pm.
Mass of Chrism: In the Cathedral Church, Monaghan, on the morning of Holy Thursday (29th March), the Bishop concelebrates the Mass of Chrism where he blesses the oils which will be used in the sacrament of Confirmation. Mr Prunty will be taking all the children for confirmation to this special mass as part of their confirmation year commitments.
Day of Dance We are very fortunate to be offered a fantastic opportunity by St. Mary’s University College Belfast to have a day of Dance in St. Mary’s P.S on Thursday the 15th of March for all of the pupils, P.1-7. 30 undergraduates along with their lecturer Dr. Elaine Rice will be visiting on the day and organizing a variety of dances for all of the children. Children will be required to wear P.E clothes, no uniform that day.
School Nurse The School Nurse, Dee Gordon will be visiting the school on Monday the 12th and Thursday the 15th of March to carry out Primary 1 Health Assessments.
World Maths Day Wednesday the 7th March marks the date to celebrate World Maths Day. In St. Mary’s on this day all the children will be participating in lots of fun Maths games and activities to help encourage the children to enjoy Maths more and have fun with Maths while learning at the same time.
