September Newsletter


Welcome back everyone to another new School Year. We hope you all had a very relaxed summer.

We give a very special welcome to our new Reception and P1 pupils; Fionn Collins, Thomas Curry, Orlaith Donohoe, Meabh Mc Caffrey, Sofia Allen, Joe Bannon, Heath King, Oisin Lilleker, Aoibhinn Mc Cahery, Jude Mc Coy, Charleyrose Mc Cusker, Colum Mc Guigan, Ella Mc Nally, Erin Mooney, Ethan Mulligan and Lara Watters. Welcome also to Luke Maguire, Sophia Maguire and Tiarnan Mc Cann in P.2, Darragh Prunty in P.3 and Ronan Prunty in P.5. We wish you all much happiness in St. Mary’s Primary School.

New Staff

We would also like to give a warm welcome to our new members of staff, our new school secretary Mrs. Catherine Cadden who is covering Rita’s Maternity leave, our new teacher Miss Catriona Bannon covering Mr. Prunty’s Principal release on Thursday and Fridays and our new classroom assistant Miss Eimear Smyth who will be covering Siobhan’s sick leave.

Texting Service and Answer Phone Service

We will have the BT answer phone service in place by the beginning of next week. We will endeavour to pick up messages at break, lunch and after school.

Mr. Prunty will have a teaching responsibility Monday to Wednesday and if Catherine has left at lunchtime the phone will not be answered until the end of school.

We will also be using a texting service called Text Local, this we hope to have up and running next week. It is very important that the school have your up to date mobile number. If you have changed your mobile number please inform the office as soon as possible.

School Times

The School day begins with class at 9.10am, please ensure your child is in school before this time. Children should not arrive at school before 8.45am. Break Time is from 11 – 11.15am and Lunch is from 12.30 to 1.15pm. The school day ends at 2pm for P.2’s and 3pm for P.3 -7.

The P.1 day will end at 12.30pm, however from Monday the 11th September the P.1 day will end at 2pm.

Reception children’s day will end for the whole year at 12pm.  


School Closures

Attached to this Newsletter is the Holiday List for the Year.

The school will be closed on Friday 26th September for Staff Development.



The school uniform for this year is detailed below as set out in the school policy. We would strongly encourage children to wear black shoes with their uniform. We will be having a full review of the school uniform this year and engaging with all of the school community, pupils, parents, staff and governors so that any changes that may be made will take effect in September 2018.

 Please ensure your child’s uniform including spare uniforms are clearly labelled.

If your child is absent, please contact the school on the first morning of absence.  It is also important that your child brings in a signed note to explain their absence on their return to school.

Please take note that if a child is required to leave early or start later for a specific reason an explanation is required and teachers are required to record this absence.


School Meals 

School Meals cost £2.60 per day or £15 per week to be paid at the beginning of the week please.

Free School Meals

If you think you are eligible for Free School Meals, please ensure you complete an application form which is available from the school office or the EA website.


Snack – Primary 1 and 2 Pupils

The cost weekly is £1.50 or for this term is £22:00 or for the year is £53:00.



Any money being paid into the school must be placed into an envelope which is clearly named. All Money should be sent into school at the beginning of each week please.


Foundation Fun

Foundation Fun will commence on Monday 4th September for P.2 children and Monday 11th September for all P.1 and P.2 pupils.  For all children the cost is £2 per child per day. Any profit made from this after school provision will be specifically used to purchase resources for the Foundation Stage.


After School Club

Homework Club: for P.7 pupils on Tuesdays and Thursdays commencing Thursday 7th September from 3:15 to 4:30pm. This club is only for those children who intend to do the Transfer Test.

If you are parent of a child who is doing the transfer test and you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Prunty


Parent Teacher Meetings

We would like to inform parents at this early stage that Parent Teaching Meetings will take place after school during the week commencing 23rd October. Teachers will send out a note at the beginning of October detailing the exact time of your meeting, teachers will be flexible to change however we would ask you to try your best to keep the appointment you are given.


Pantomime Trip

The school will be travelling to the Opera House in Belfast to see ‘Peter Pan’ in Pantomime on Monday 11th December. This year the P.3-7 children will be attending along with appropriate numbers of staff to supervise. On the same day or shortly afterwards we will bring the P.1 and P.2 children to the cinema in Enniskillen. The cost of the panto trip per pupil is £15 and to be paid in the school office by the first week in October.


School Council /Eco Council

During the end of September each class will be holding elections for the School Council and we also hope to form an Eco Council.

Unfortunately, the Ulster Council Sport’s Programme is in jeopardy of being cut due to a lack of Government funding. If you have the opportunity to voice your concern in surveys or petition on social media, please do so. This is a fantastic programme taken by trained coaches to help develop children’s Fundamental skills, including handling, co-ordination and movement.



We would all like to extend our warmest congratulations to Rita our school secretary who gave birth to a beautiful baby girl last week. Rita and baby Emma are doing well, best wishes.
